Your shelf drawn as a jar. Dots for things that are fine stay pale, amber means soon or today, and red is kept for a safety date that has passed.
"Use by" is about safety and "best before" is about quality, and Amberjar treats them differently. Bread a day past best before turns amber, not red.
Mark something opened and a second clock starts. Plenty of things keep for months sealed and only days once the lid is off, so the shelf goes by whichever date comes first.
Medicines get a heads-up weeks before their date, sent in the morning, with time left to get a refill.
Widgets show what's due next without opening the app.
Once a week by default, a quick pass through the shelf to confirm what's still there and clear out what's gone.
