How to find it, step by step

- Pick the device you are looking for. Signal readings only mean something once you are tracking one specific device instead of watching all of them at once.

Why other finder apps feel broken
Bluetooth signal strength is reported as RSSI, and raw RSSI is far noisier than people expect. A device sitting completely still on a table swings across a range of about fifteen decibels while nothing in the room moves. Your own body absorbs a chunk of it, and so does a sofa cushion, a wall, or a fridge.
Most finder apps render that raw value straight to a bar or a dial, and it flails, which is why they feel useless the moment you actually need one. It also never shows a distance in metres. Without a published transmit power, which most devices do not broadcast, any distance figure is invented. The last metre is physical: inside bags rather than around them, under and behind soft furniture rather than on it, and coat pockets before anything else. Fabric and bodies absorb 2.4 GHz badly, which is exactly why the final step is done by hand.
If the signal never rises anywhere in the building, that is worth knowing early. It means the battery is flat or the item is not there, and Dowse says so rather than leaving you chasing a meter. That turns a fruitless technical hunt into a normal search of the places you actually went.
